Apple is planning to introduce intelligent tracking prevention in its
next safari update. Intelligent tracking or ITP, as it is popularly
called, sets limitations over third party tracking technology from
encapsulating cross site browsing information. With ITP. The third
party cookies can only be used for a day from the time of visit if
you visit the site via safari. After a day, these cookies can only be
used for signing in. The cookies will be purged completely after 1
month.
How
google responded to ITP
With the release of Apple's Safari update, google makes some changes
in AdWords tracking as a preventive measure. Mainly, Google has
created a new analytics cookie that captures both conversion data and
campaign information from safari that comply with rules of ITP.
“We are updating our measurement tools, consistent with Apple’s
recommendations for ad attribution, to help our customers continue to
accurately measure ad clicks and conversions,” said Chi Hea Cho, a
Google spokesperson via email.
Working
of Gac cookie
Yes, gac cookie is the name given to the new cookie release by google
which simply means google analytics cookie. gac cookie will primarily
be used to store the information regarding ad click whenever auto
tagging is on. Analytics write campaign info to the cookie whenever a
user opens a page on your website via a URL that has AdWords auto
tagging. The difference is in the way how the gac cookie is handled.
Normally, the cookie is set on Googleadservices.com domain and was
considered as a third party cookie. However, from now onwards, the
cookie will be set on advertisers domain and hence it becomes a first
party cookie. According to ITP, first party cookies are absolutely
acceptable.
In AdWords Help section, google has clearly explained about the
changes happening. The impact of bidding and monitoring conversion
are also mentioned in the section. It will also take some time for
the conversions to be visible in your AdWords reporting.
